ABOUT THE CLOVIS COMMUNITY BAND

Our musical journey

The Clovis Community Band is an important part of the music experience available for adults in the Clovis/Fresno area. The outstanding concert band serves as a valuable outlet for musicians who play frequently, or for those who have been away from their instruments for a while and need a venue to play. The Clovis Community Band performs six concerts a year, four that are at the wonderful Shaghoian Theatre located at the Clovis North high school campus. The band was organized under the leadership of Bruce Morrow during the mid-1990s. The group was founded with three principles in mind: play an instrument for fun, educate the musician and audience through musical performance, and community service. After two years, Duane Weston became the groups next director, and the band grew from about 20 instrumentalists to about 75. The genre of performance music grew along with the growth of the band, to include show music, big band era, traditional marches (old and new), and older concert music to the contemporary form. Since the retirement of Mr. Weston in June of 2013, the band has been under the leadership of Dan Lindstrom. Under Dan's leadership, the band continues to grow both in size and in musicianship. The Clovis Community Band is sponsored by Clovis Adult Education, Clovis Community Education, and the Clovis Unified School District.

ABOUT OUR DIRECTOR

Dan Lindstrom, in his own words

I have always been around music.  My family members all played an instrument and sang in organized choirs.  My choice for trumpet came from my brother.  He was older and of course if he did it I had too. For a short time in High School I did consider going to the University of Minnesota and become a Librarian like my father, but music won out.

My music education 1970 – 75 was at Fresno State University with summer work at San Jose State. I had an instrumental and vocal focus while at Fresno State.  This was advantageous because I taught both Band and Choir for 13 years in Madera. I taught at the elementary level for four years and nine years of Band/Choir and district coordinator of music. I was very fortunate to have great students and lots of support from the School District.

In 1989 I decided to get my Administrative Credential from Fresno Pacific College to expand my work as the District Coordinator.  But a change in Superintendents made me realize working full time as a music administrator was not in the cards.  I took the position of Adult School Principal to complete my Administrative Credential.  Four years later I was brought in to take charge of the newly formed Madera South High School. We did many innovative, creative things at this school.  I finished out my career from 2006 to 2012 as Principal of Madera Adult School and Furman High School. My last hurrah was helping the staff at each school get a six-year WASC accreditation before I retired.

My next adventure was figuring out what to do in retirement.  One thing for sure was playing my trumpet again regularly.  So I joined the Clovis Community Band and the Fresno Community Band.  The Clovis Band was invited to play at the 70th Commemoration of D-Day in Normandy France. In 2013, Duane Weston who was the director decided to retire from conducting. This left the band in an awkward position so I said I’d over conducting for one year. My first order of business was to get the band ready to travel to London and France.  This trip was wonderful and really put the band on the map. Well, here we are almost 8 years later. I guess the band is stuck with me...
